Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers – Are you one of the baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964?

Did you know that the term ‘baby boomer’ related to persons born in Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.  After WW2 these countries experienced a baby boom.  Nowadays, this term is used for all countries worldwide.

In April 2014 the number of baby boomers in the USA were estimated to be 76.4 million.  In Australia the figure is around 5.5 million, 10 million in Canada and 7.6 million in the UK.

In 2009 KPMG conducted a survey of 232 Monash Residents in Victoria, Monash contains the 6th largest concentration of baby boomers in Victoria.  The suburb of Monash and its baby boomers are aligned with the demographics of Sydney region Ku-ring-gai and Redland in Brisbane.

Quoting from the report on ‘What Boomers Want’ in the Executive Summary

  • wellbeing – includes health and recreational activities
  • finances – concerns about being able to live the lifestyle they aspire to and which has been limited by the Global Financial Crisis
  • engagement – can include part time employment but not in a restrictive way; this also includes access to meaningful volunteering
  • housing – affordable housing for those without a home and home and garden maintenance for those with a home and who very much intend ageing-in-place
  • family and social connection – boomers are being sandwiched by frail parents (in theirs 80s and 90s) and demanding Generation Y children in their 20s and 30s who want child minding services

      Hi Sharon
Thanks for your comment. How long are you planning to travel for and where to? Our trip currently will be about 18 months on the road, Central and South America and Europe. We house sit along the way to keep our costs down, enjoy living like a local in places that we had never dreamt of going to before, and caring for pets, homes, pools and gardens. When we are not house sitting we either stay in hostels or if we intend to stay for a longer time we search for an apartment. By travelling to lower cost countries, staying longer etc reduces your travelling costs. Flexibility is the key, dont be too rigid in your plans. If you have further questions let us know. Cheers Jane and Duncan

    Hi Jane and Duncan,
I just discovered your site and can’t wait to read my first newsletter. We are a 68 year old, American couple who plan to start living our dream in approximately one year…husband just retired and we will spend this year downsizing and putting our affairs in order. We plan to sell our home next Spring.
It has always been my dream to rent a river barge for a few/several months in Europe as part of our travel adventures..any suggestions?
    Thanks, Julie

      Hi Julie
We enjoyed renting barges around France many years ago when the boys were young. Three trips in total – the Loire, The Burgundy and the Brittany region. A great way to travel. We used Crown Blue Line but these days they are called Le Boat. Check them out, you could also buy one for the several months and then sell it at the end of the season.
Our friends Al and Shelly have a great site – check this out for downsizing…let them know that we sent you!
